About Us

Furniture Magicians is a privately owned furniture and kitchen cabinet repair and refinishing company.

Established in 1993, Furniture Magicians offers residential and commercial customers an alternative to replacing damaged furniture and kitchen cabinets.

The Furniture Magicians technicians have mastered many skills beyond environmentally friendly touch up and repair for wood furniture. We also specialize in faux stone and leather finishes, as well as continuing the art of hand caning and rushing. Diligent study and continuing education in the repair industry insures that Furniture Magicians is current on new products and environmentally friendly methods.

In practice, those environmentally friendly methods mean the products we reach for are increasingly water-based, plant-based or alcohol-based.

Four of us work here now. One is highly skilled in restoration; another in hand caning and rushing, a craft with very few people still practising it locally. About 70% of our work is residential and 30% commercial.

Why repair rather than replace

The thing most people get wrong is assuming damaged furniture is finished. A great deal of what gets thrown away could have been restored.

There are two reasons to repair. The first is that some pieces cannot be replaced at all — a family heirloom is not available to buy.

The second is simply cost. Replacing one broken chair from a dining set costs far less than replacing the whole set of chairs, and you keep the set you already had rather than starting again with something that matches nothing else in the room.

Susan started Furniture Magicians in 1993 for a straightforward reason: she loves restoring furniture and saving family history. More than thirty years on, that is still the job.

Some pieces demand real patience. An antique travel trunk that came to us had suffered failure in both its glue and its wood — it had to be saturated for a full year before it could be assembled at all, because until then no glue would adhere. The family who owned it knew its history and dated it themselves; the newest paint on it goes back to the American centennial of 1876.

Estimates, and what we don’t do

Estimates

Our main service area is a 25-mile radius of the workshop. We do travel beyond it, but a travel fee applies outside our normal working area.

In-home visits are usually free where a repair cannot be diagnosed without seeing the piece. Military and insurance inspections are a separate, chargeable service starting at $185 — see military estimates and insurance inspections.

What we don’t do

Two things we are asked for regularly and do not offer:

  • We do not replace glass
  • We do not manufacture parts

Service area

Furniture Magicians has regularly offered services to the Hampton Roads region of Virginia for over 30 years. Based in Newport News, Furniture Magicians also offers services to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Smithfield, Williamsburg, Chesapeake, Gloucester, and everywhere in between.

In addition to our usual service area, we have served customers as far as Richmond, Fredericksburg, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Wherever you are, feel free to contact us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
